Wellington about and histoy

Wellington

Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand is located on the picturesque harbor at the southeastern end of the North Island. Coming from north you will pass through Kapiti Coast on the western side and Wairarapa plains on the eastern side of the city. Hutt Valley is towards the north of Wellington, it is a famous urban expansion. The city of Porirua with its coastal communities is spread beyond the north of Wellington.

Wellington shares a friendly jibing with Auckland, another main city, due to the common misconception that Auckland is actually the capital city of New Zealand.  Wellington is nicknamed as ‘Windy Welly’, is a friendly and energetic city with a very lively soul. Coastal hills, spectacular landscape and thriving city life keeps the visitors enthralled in Wellington.

Like most cities of New Zealand, Wellington has rich and colorful Maori history, dated back to about 950 AD. The Maori name for Wellington was ‘Te Upoko o te lka a Maui’, meaning the head of Maui’s fish. There are evidence of Maori settlement and cultivation everywhere in Wellington. Colonization in Wellington began as early as in 1840 when European settlers arrived in the region. Wellington was named as capital of New Zealand due to its pivotal central geographical location. History of Wellington is incomplete without the mention of Wahine Disaster in April 1968. Wahine Disaster is the worst shipping disasters in New Zealand, the tragedy happened by collision of two huge storms that exploded over Wellington. The footage of this disastrous storm was screened around the world. The television coverage for the storm later won an International World News film award for the crew.

Visitors to Wellington are mostly astonished by how much the place has to offer in terms of places to see and things that can be done. Wellington has about 500 kilometer of regional parks and forests. The hilly terrain and extensive harbors of Wellington, attracts locals and visitors alike. You could feel the distinct smell of ocean everywhere you go in Wellington; it has actually engulfed the surrounding valleys and green hills of the region. The cityscape shimmers at nights and the view is spectacular, almost unlike anywhere else in the world.

The place is not all about outlandish landscapes and hilly countryside; Wellington also has some of the best museums, art galleries, restaurants and coffee houses of the country. The historic sites and artistic treasures are the fun places to visit for the whole family. Wellington also hosts ‘Festival of the Arts’ every two years, which attracts art enthusiasts around the country. There are Visitor Information Center from where the tourists get information on the events taking place during any particular time of the year.
