Waikato Region

Waikato Region The Waikato Region of New Zealand is a popular scenic destination. Waikato was the part of significant battles during the Maori Land Wars in the mid of 19th century. Waikato region is located centrally at about 90 minutes drive from the main cities of Auckland, Tauranga and Rotoura. Waikato is the fourth largest region in New Zealand, covering an area of about 24,378 square kilometers. Located in the Central North Island of New Zealand, tourists often use Waikato as the base camp for vacations.

The weather in Waikato is mostly mild and humid. Spring in the Waikato region brings plenty of sun with occasional showers. Average temperatures in summers remain between 20-25° C. Winters is the best time to surf the beaches, with an average day time temperature between 10-15°C. The soil is fertile in Waikato with the annual rainfall of 1,500 millimeters per year.

Waikato has two largest water masses of the country, the 425 kilometer Waikato River, is the longest river in the New Zealand and 606 square kilometers long Lake Taupo, is the largest lake of New Zealand. Waikato offers unique natural attractions. Waterfalls, hot mineral pools and wild surf beaches, you will find all that in plenty here. The most famous underground attraction is the Waitomo Caves. The word Waitomo is derived from Maori words, ‘Wai’ meaning water and ‘tomo’ meaning hole. Waitomo leads you to the magical world of ancient limestone structures, which have taken 30 million years to form.

Waikato Region has long been known for its lush green pastures, hills and farmlands. Waikato is also called the land of two spectacular landscapes – one above the ground for its magnificent lush green surface and the other below the ground, for its exceptional under water beauty. The scenery in Waikato is remarkably green, making this place a true heaven on earth.

Hamilton is the major city of the region and it is also considered to be the heart of Waikato. Hamilton is strategically located on four major highways and has the biggest railway junction in New Zealand - the North Island Main Trunk Line and the East Coast Main Trunk. Hamilton also has its own airport, which gives more significance to this place. Waikato Region has a university and many research institutes. Great emphasis is laid on research and innovation, especially in bio technology area.

The entire region of Waikato is covered in stunning waterfalls, beaches, the magical limestone glowworm caves and bush covered mountains. There are also small towns throughout the region, each with their own specialties.
