Located in the North Island region of New Zealand, Waikato and the King Country are popular among tourists. There are many ways of getting around Waikato and the King Country that includes traveling by air, bus and coach service, car rental, ferry, rail and cruise ships.

Waikato has as international airport in Hamilton, which is located about 14 kilometer south of the main city. Hamilton airport is the fourth largest airport in New Zealand. You can take a taxi, shuttle or an airport coach for going to the city from the airport. A shuttle is the cost effective way to travel to the city. They are like mini buses and carry a maximum of 10 passengers. Discounts are offered if two or more people are traveling together. Taxi cabs are a slightly expensive option, especially if you are traveling in the peak traffic hours. Airport coaches are a good option for travelers staying at a hostel or in hotels located in downtown.

Although the rail network does not have a strong infrastructure all through New Zealand, but there are some exceptional voyages available. Using the rail for getting around Waikato and the King Country promises a scenic journey. Tourists often take this route to enjoy the beauty, tranquility and serenity of the regions.

Waikato has an excellent road network, King Country, although relatively smaller in area and mostly consists of smaller towns than Waikato, also has a reliable road network. Self drive is a great way to explore the splendor of the regions. The roads in general are of very high standard. All main roads are carefully marked and signposted for the convenience of pedestrians and motorists alike. You need to be 21 or older to rent a car anywhere in New Zealand. You need to have a legal driving license from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IPD) to drive here.

New Zealand offers great opportunities for water travel. Northland, in general is famous for its unique landscape. A paddle steamer cruise in Waikato is a popular traveler’s delight. Sighting of dolphins, whales and fur seals is a fascination for children and adults alike. Water taxis on the other hand is a handy start for a hiking track or reaching destinations that are inaccessible by ferries.
