Tongariro Region located in the central plateau is a magnificent region. The region of Tongariro presents the most popular and unspoilt image of the country. There are many things to do and places to see in Tongariro region.

Tongariro National Park is the center of all the activities in the region. The Tongariro National Park is located in the Taupo region is an important place to see in Tongariro region. The city of Taupo is located on the northern shore of Lake Taupo. The Tongariro National Park is the oldest national parks in the world. Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe are the three outstanding volcanoes here.  The mighty active volcanoes make Tongariro most spectacular parks of New Zealand.

You can find many places to see and things to do in Tongariro National Park region. Whakapapa Village is a small yet beautiful alpine village is popular place to see in Tongariro region. Whakapapa located at the foot of Mount Ruapehu has skiing areas; the historic Chateau Tongariro Hotel is a popular destination among vacationers.

Mount Ruapehu has a long, multi peaked summit, and it is the highest and most active of all the volcanoes. Mount Ruapehu is a favorite place to see for skiers from around the country.

Visit to Tongariro Crossing is another thing to do in Tongariro region. The Tongariro Crossing is considered to be the finest one day walk in New Zealand. The track passes through vegetation zones ranging from alpine scrub to tussock. 

Ruapehu Crater Rim is a steep 15 kilometers walk that leads to the small glacier of Cathedral Rocks. Crater Lake is a popular place to see in Tongariro region. You can reach Crater Lake from the Ohakune side too. But the walk from Ohakune is track is steeper, although you can reach up the rim in five hours and go down in three hours only.

Skiing is a well known sport in Tongariro region and a sure delight for adventure enthusiasts. Whakapapa Village is a must place to see in Tongariro region also owns the largest ski areas in New Zealand. Whakapapa Ski Area, Tukino Ski area and Turoa Ski area invite tourists from around the country. The Tukino Ski area on the eastern side allows accessibility through 4WD. Tourists can find shuttle bus service, that run from Taupo, Turangi, Whakapapa Village and Tongariro National Park.

How about a cup of coffee with stunning mountain views about 2020 meters above sea level? Then visit to Knoll Ridge Café is a must thing to do for you in Tongariro region. Knoll Ridge Café is the highest café of the country. During summers chair lift operates from Ruapehu that takes guests to the wonderland.

Mount Tongariro is yet another tourist attraction in Tongariro. It still has an active volcano and a number of colored lakes and hot springs dotting its uneven summit.
