Places to see in Northland

Northland, being a part of the rich history of New Zealand, has great historical significance. Besides its eventful past, this region has a rich culture and distinguished landscapes. The overall warm climate makes Northland a travel friendly destination. Home to the beautiful Bay of Islands, Waitangi, Paihia, Russell and Waipoua Forest, Northland displays a wide array of activities all year round. With so much to offer the list of places to see in Northland is never-ending.

Any excursion to Northland is incomplete without visiting the historic Waitangi, which is located just outside of Paihia, where the treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. The Waitangi Treaty house has now been turned to the National Museum and is an important place to see in Northland. This destination is popular among tourists due to its historic significance.

The Bay of Islands on the east coast of Northland remains one of the most popular tourist attractions throughout the year. These picturesque destinations with white sandy beaches top the list of places to see in Northland. There are boat trips available to take tourists to the different islands. Besides boat trips tourists can have fun sailing, swimming and fishing. Swimming with friendly dolphins is yet another highlight of the trip to the Bay of Islands.

Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga are some of the other most renowned places to see in Northland. Tourists can visit there through organized tours, which can be found everywhere around the city. The diverse scenery along the ride, from orchards and farmlands to native forests and coastal beaches are a sure treat for visitors. Tourists can also take the pleasure of 4WD at 90 Mile Beach or surf, swim, dig for shellfish and collect sea shells along the shore. The breathtaking view of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean crashing on to the rocks of Cape Reinga can be termed as the highlight of the tour. This whole place, with postcard surroundings is a photographer’s delight.

Waipoua Kauri Forest is another place to see in Northland. This also happens to be the largest remaining track of native forests in Northland. Waipoua is home to Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere, the two largest and oldest living Kauri trees in the world. You can come along side to some enormous Kauri trees that are about 2000 year old.

The craftsmen and artists of Northland are internationally known. Art critics and amateurs visit galleries and studios to see the fine work on display. Visitors often take a quick trip to vineyards in Northland that produce award winning wines. All the vineyards welcome visitors and tasting.

Awanui, Whangarei, Tuyukaka, Kerikeri, Russell and Opononi are some of the other places to see in Northland. As an ‘Adventure capital of the World’ Northland is an exciting holiday destination.
