Getting Around Northland Northland is a narrow peninsula, about 330 kilometers long from Auckland to Cape Reinga. It is a part of one of the 16 regions of New Zealand. Being the birthplace of the nation, this region offers rich historic and archaeological sites.
Getting around Northland is relatively easy. There are many ways to choose from, by air or by road, through ferry service or cruise ship. These flexible transportation options make Northland a travel friendly destination.

There are three airports in Northland at Whangarei, Kerikeri and Kaitaia. Auckland is the main international getaway to reach Northland. Air New Zealand, has a complete coverage in Northland, besides that, air charter operators offer helicopter and fixed wing transport according to the travel requirements. Getting around Northland by air, with views of beautiful mountains and volcanoes, makes the scenic journey even more worthwhile.

Self drive is still the most popular way of getting around Northland, to see and appreciate the unmatched landscape. The circular Twin Coast Discovery Highway is the most stunning way to explore the beautiful areas of Northland. Starting from Auckland, this highway gives you the option to decide your trip according to your interests. Heritage trail, wine trail, golf trail, art trail are some of the famous trails you can plan your excursion for.

Like everywhere in New Zealand, Northland also has an extensive bus network. The Northland Regional Council, administers the contracted bus service in Whangarei. Inter city bus service is available for commuters, on very nominal charges.

Getting around Northland by sea has its own beauty. Some charter companies allow you to charter a yacht, allowing you to explore the beauty of Northland. When entering Northland by sea, you have to contact maritime officials 48 hours prior to your arrival at the port. This allows them to arrange for customs officials to meet you on arrival. As per New Zealand Immigration requirements, valid passports will be required for entry and if necessary a relevant visa too. Please check this prior to departure for New Zealand. December to March is the cruise ship season in Northland. Great choices and discount package deals make them the popular mode of transportation for tourists. There are three types of ferry trips available in Northland; Opua Paihia and Hokianga.
