New Zealand Weather



New Zealand Weather Located in the South Pacific, New Zealand is one of the top travel destinations in the world today. Home to a staggering array of landscapes and an incredible abundance of activities to enjoy, New Zealand is also famous for its great but often variable weather. In fact it is said that you can experience four seasons in a single day out here! This is why when you are travel across New Zealand you will always find the locals discussing weather conditions. When traveling in New Zealand it is important to dress well and carry clothing to suit any weather. A good way to do this is to layer your clothing.

The weather in New Zealand also depends upon which part of the country you are in. If you are on the North Island, the weather here is subtropical with warm humid days; however, on the South Island, the weather is much more cooler and temperate. New Zealand is said to have a generally moderate climate, where during the winter it gets quite cold, while in summers expect the weather to be between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. New Zealand’s climate is also determined by the mountains and the sea.


As New Zealand sits in the Southern Hemisphere, the temperature falls the more you travel south. The summer here is from September to February, while winter is from March to August. December and January are the warmest month, while it is the coldest in June and July.

When traveling in New Zealand always be on the lookout for unexpected changes in the weather especially if you are interested in outdoor activities. It can be sunny one moment and very cold the next. Some areas that receive the most sunshine in New Zealand are; Hawke’s Bay Nelson, the Bay of Plenty and Marlborough.

Although you can visit New Zealand all year round, the best time to come here is during the summer, when you can expect high temperatures and sunny weather most of the time. Autumn is from March to May and is an excellent time to enjoy hiking and tramping.
