New Plymouth, the main city of Taranaki is located half way between the major cities of Auckland and Wellington. It is only four and a half hour drive from either city. Covering the area of 232,400 hectares, New Plymouth District is the largest districts of New Zealand. The total population of this area is 68,901, which is about two third of the total population of Taranaki region.

New Plymouth, the seaside city with a bustling port, is fast gaining the reputation of a dream destination for the city dwellers, who seek escape form the hustle and bustle of the city. This small metropolis promises to provide all the amenities of an urban life. 

New Plymouth enjoys warm, moist and temperate climate throughout the year. The average temperature in summers ranges between 21-22ºC. Winters have cooler nights and temperature drops to 5-6ºC, with fairly moderate day temperature, which ranges between 13-14ºC. New Plymouth has its own airport, and there are regular, direct flights to Auckland and Wellington. Also the city offers connecting flights to other cities in New Zealand.

New Plymouth has an interesting mix of diverse cultures; tourists treasure the traditional friendliness and contemporary style of Kiwis since colonial days. The 7 kilometer coastal walkway from Port Taranaki to the Waiwhakaiho River is popular among tourists visiting New Plymouth. Puke Ariki is a museum cum library and information complex, directly adjacent to the sea, is also a popular city hub. 

Mount Taranaki and Egmont National Park in New Plymouth are the most sought destinations of New Zealand. Organized tours are available to climb the majestic Mount Taranaki. The snowy cone of Mount Taranaki is the main point for all adventures. Egmont National Park is the second largest park of New Zealand attracts tourists year round. Tramping and hiking are some of the most popular activities on Mount Taranaki.

The beautifully built New Plymouth Opera House is famous among opera lovers, not only for its operas but also because of its aesthetic beauty. Interestingly, opera house hosts many other types of performances too.

The Sugar Loaf Islands in marine protected area is popular among divers in summer and autumn. This island is offshore from New Plymouth have spectacular valleys, caves, rock faces, large pinnacles and marvelous sand flats. The Sugar Loaf islands are popular destination in New Plymouth, famous for more than 89 species of fish, rare sea birds and breeding colony of fur seals all over in New Zealand.

The Devon Street is renowned among diners in New Plymouth. The place offers great choices of dinners and nightclubs to suit every range. The scrumptious local cuisines and wide range of entertainment welcome tourists to the Devon Street during their stay.

New Plymouth is famous for its gardens and parks. The annual Rhododendron Festival here is popular among horticulture fans. Pukekura Park with 49 hectares of gardens, bush walks, ponds, cafés and waterfalls is popular among vacationers.
