Nelson Lakes National Park
The Nelson Lakes National Park is situated on the South Island of New Zealand.
It was established in 1956 and occupies an area of about 1,020 km2. Famous for its spectacular alpine scenery, camping, tramping and fishing, inside this park you can also find two beautiful glacial lakes, Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa. The park is administered by the Department of Conservation, which operates a Visitors Centre in Saint Arnaud that provides tourists and visitors here with the most up-to-date and reliable information about this national park.
Easily accessible via the State Highway 63 from Blenheim, this park is also reachable via the stunning Lewis Pass if you are traveling from Nelson, the West Coast or Christchurch. The main township in the area is St Arnaud, which is a superb alpine retreat that is serviced by a number of transport providers. Accommodations are aplenty out here as well. However, most people visiting this national park prefer to say in the huts that can be found on the hiking and walking tracks here. Plus, there is also a tourist lodge to stay at near Lake Rotoroa.
The Nelson Lakes National Park offers plenty of walking and hiking opportunities. Terh most popular tramping track here has to be the Travers-Sabine Circuit, which takes between 5 to 6 days to complete beginning at Lake Rotoiti to Travers Saddle and the Mt Robert ski field. This area offers some great winter skiing. If you are looking for a more challenging trail then try the remote D’Urville Valley Track, which starts and ends at Lake Rotoroa via the Sabine Valley and Moss Pass.
This park one of the prettiest national parks to explore, with a number of terrific activities to enjoy out here as well. Scenic boating is available on the lakes here as is some excellent brown trout fishing. You can also enjoy some canoeing in the area, while during the winter, the skiing here is first-class. Rafting, horse trekking, gold panning and mountain biking are also on hand out here with some great aerial scenic flights. There are also short walks on hand here around the lakes, which are an excellent way to spend an afternoon exploring the area’s natural beauty. You can also enjoy some bird watching out here with many birds living around the lakes including the rifleman, tomtits, robins and kakas.
