Manawatu Region, in the North Island has derived its name from the Manawatu River, located in the southwest of the North Island. Manawatu is a large plain, rich in sheep and dairy farming. Palmerston North is the biggest city of Manawatu which house more than 70 major educational and research institutes of the New Zealand. Awapuni hosts 17 races in a year, with the lucrative prize sum of $2.26 million. Awapuni is hosting races for almost 100 years; it attracts large number of visitors and regular participants. The Manawatu and Wanganui regions of North Islands boast some of the best rural life in New Zealand. The sand dunes and coastal plains in Himatangi, to the mountains of Tararua and Ruahine there are some distinct places to see in this region. The estuary by Manawatu River at Foxton is a popular place to see in Manawatu Region.
