Manawatu Region

Manawatu Region


Manawatu Region is located in the North Island region of New Zealand. Manawatu region is close to Rotorua and Wellington. Manawatu has derived its name from the Manawatu River of North Island. Manawatu is a beautiful region that has the charm of rural New Zealand and sophistication of Palmerston North city.

Manawatu Region has large extensive coastal plains and it is hilly mostly towards the north. Sheep farming, dairy farming and cattle raising are famous in Manawatu region. Taihape in Manawatu region has largest villages and towns along the road leading to famous Mount Ruapehu. Taihape is also called ‘gumboot capital’; gumboot is another name for Wellington boots. Every year a festival is held to celebrate this essential item of rural Kiwi dwellers.

Palmerston North is the biggest town in Manawatu region and also the eleventh largest city of New Zealand. Locals fondly refer Palmerston North as ‘Palmy’. Palmerston North is home to major educational and research institutions of New Zealand. Many old stores in Palmerston North have been renovated to popular boutiques, cafés and restaurants. There are many parks and gardens in Palmerston North; Victoria Esplanade on the northern bank of Manawatu River attracts tourists year round.

Manawatu River is the major river of the country. This river is unique from other rivers in New Zealand; it starts from eastern side of the main range but outflows to the west. Manawatu River offers excellent trout fishery along with bungee jumping and white water rafting. Tourists to Manawatu region often plan excursion to this beautiful river and enjoy the assortment of activities offered.

New Zealand Rugby Museum in Manawatu region is the oldest and the very first museum dedicated to sports. For tourists attractions there is an extensive collection of rugby memorabilia and records, a photo library, giving detailed information of the advent of rugby in New Zealand. The Rugby Museum is located within walking distance of the Palmerston North city center. You can visit there alone or with family, however group visits can be arrange too.

Besides beautiful lush green gardens and parks, New Palmerston offers many other outdoor adventures like trip to River Valley or visit to historic Hiwinui Country Estate. Owlcatraz – Native Bird and Wildlife Park is especially popular among families visiting Palmerston North.

Manawatu region bestows natural scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage. The region enjoys mild, temperate climate. The pleasant climate and low rainfall provides perfect growing conditions for world class city gardens, walking tracks are great pastime for the visitors.
