Getting around Coromandel Region

Coromandel is a beautiful destination; rich in history with peaceful beaches, it is a   haven for outdoor lovers. Tourists come to this town to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the region. Getting around Coromandel is relatively easy, located just 90 minutes drive from the main city of Auckland; Coromandel is New Zealand’s premier tourist destination.

There are buses, ferry services, organized tours, guided walks, car rentals, backpacker buses, air and railways for intercity transport.

Coromandel Discovery offers tours to even the remotest of towns. Coromandel Coastal Walkway is a coastal drive with three to four hour self guided walk. Enjoy picturesque farmlands with coastal views of the native New Zealand. The Coastal Walkway that links Fletcher Bay to Stony Bay is ranked as the most beautiful coastal walk of the country.

Buses and coaches are a cost effective way of getting around Coromandel. As an added advantage you need not worry about reading maps while driving. Most of them even offer description about the places and stop frequently for refreshments en route. Smoking is not permitted during the bus ride. It is advisable to reserve journey in advance during vacations and peak travel time in summers.

Like all the major cities of New Zealand, Coromandel also offer various car rental companies for tourists and residents alike. There are many international companies like Budget, Avis and Hertz, providing a wide range of vehicles. This is a highly competitive business; and car rental companies often offer cheap deals. It is important for tourists to note that they need to be 25 in order to hire a car anywhere in New Zealand.

Getting around Coromandel in a ferry is a scenic adventure. The ferry you take from Auckland or Waiheke will take you to Coromandel. The Interislander ferry system operates in New Zealand year round. It has three vessels by the name of Arahura, Kaitaki, and Aratere. The ferries offer three fare types; Easy Change, Saver Change and Ultra Saver. Easy Change as the name suggests offers the most flexible rates, Saver Change offers mid range fares, you have to sustain 50% fee on the cancellation of tickets. Ultra Saver fares are the cheapest way to travel, but once booked the tickets are nonrefundable.

You can fly to Coromandel using the domestic air service. Air New Zealand and Qantas are the main domestic airlines. Other than that there are services by some regional airline and charter companies.

Whether going around to Coromandel by road, air, ferry this scenic peninsula with its warm weather has a lot to offer the tourists visiting all year round.
